Nursing home reform: fait accompli or frontier?
Article Abstract:
The deteriorating quality of care in nursing homes has prompted the need for nursing home reform and regulations. In 1987, the Nursing Home Reform Law was enacted under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA). Although more mandates of this kind have been hampered by delays and politics, some positive results from the OBRA regulation have been documented. Although this signifies that nursing home reform has passed the frontier, inadequate care plans, violations in resident assessment, and unsanitary distribution of food, among others, are problems that some nursing homes still face.

The impact of the social environment on nursing home residents
Article Abstract:
A study of two nursing home units, where one unit houses socially intact residents while the other has residents who are either cognitively or physically impaired or in need of skilled nursing, was conducted. Based on a study of the 'social environment' that prevailed in both units, it was found that the quality of life of the residents largely relied on the level of the social environment of the unit that they belonged to. This suggests that a unit's social environment could affect the resident's conception of self, his interactions with other residents and with the nursing staff.
