Populist paradigms: Palestinian sociology

Article Abstract:

Palestinian sociologists used new approaches in sociological investigation following the conclusion of the Madrid Peace Conference in 1992 and the first Palestinian Israeli Peace agreement in 1993. They focused on constructing a comprehensive sampling frame. They were able to conduct a comprehensive survey of the West Bank and Gaza population while the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics was able to collate a wide range of data concerning all Palestinian districts in a short period of time. Thus, Palestinian sociologists were able to come up with a paradigm in determining the condition of its populace.

The dominance of the external: Israeli sociology

Article Abstract:

Israel is a Jewish state established in 1948 whose history is replete with military conflicts against its Arab neighbors. Israeli sociology's structure and discourse are focused on international concerns more than on the national, making it outward-oriented. Many sociologists work on local topics and use various theories whose frameworks and strategies are prevalent in international settings. Its sociologists can thus compete in the global academic market since their studies are holistic in nature.

(Re)making sociology: breaking the bonds of our discipline

Article Abstract:

Sociologists are constrained by the methods they use in interpreting data. Research approaches instruct them to transform the lives of the samples they study into simple statistics without taking into account the social and interpersonal structural relationships of privilege and power that connect the researcher and the researched. This perspective distorts the view of sociologists. Sociologists would do better to take a more active role in proselytizing sociological understandings.
