Possibilities for change toward universal design: Japanese housing policy for seniors at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Japan's housing policy for seniors should include barrier-free designs that can meet the basic requirements for dwelling and independent living in the rapidly changing social amd economic environment. Designs should include facilities for the aged and disabled persons, children and others. Although the Housing Loan Corporation provides loans for design requirements of older people, support for constructing higher quality dwellings should be increased. Designs of dwellings should include handrails and avoid level differences on floors to promote better living conditions for the elderly.

The extent and nature of alcohol-related problems in public senior housing

Article Abstract:

In Connecticut, a survey was conducted on local housing authorities (LHA's) in connection with the nature, extent and management policies of alcohol- related problems prevalent in public senior housing. The result showed a great variance among the LHA's experience and handling of alcohol misuse. Statistics showed that LHA size affect the percentage of incidence and that most LHA's have no staff training on the detection and handling of such problems. It is implied that a formal policy is necessary to provide guidelines on staff and resident responsibilities regarding alcohol misuse.

Toward an equitable, universal caregiver policy: the potential of financial supports for family caregivers

Article Abstract:

An examination of the policies on caregiver support highlights the effects of an explicit federal policy that would provide financial remuneration to family caregivers. Caregivers represent a strong constituency, who would benefit from the inclusion of a national caregiver policy within the national health care plan. However, the development of such policy may be impeded by the scarcity of information on the financial needs of informed caregivers.
