Prevention of childhood mental disorders: a literature review reflecting hope and a vision for the future

Article Abstract:

US mental health provisions have traditionally concentrated on the treatment and rehabilitation of people with mental health problems, but there is increasing interest in programs to prevent psychiatric disorders. A review of the literature on prevention of psychiatric disorders reveals factors which produce a higher risk of mental illness, including family issues, and factors which promote resilience. Social workers know techniques to develop and sustain resiliency factors. Policy makers have the opportunity to use this knowledge to address the 12% psychiatric disorder rate in US children.
