Rational ignorance, deceptive advertising, and the size of government

Article Abstract:

Cheap and unaccountable official publicity and relative ignorance of the voters in democracy helps the government to remain large. This in turn helps the government in the redistribution of wealth to the public and in justifying official policies. The official propaganda of economic and social development is often misleading as it conceals the true cost and shows the same benefit as different. The opponents are constrained to counter the official policies and draw public attention because the real cost of publicity is prohibitive.

Restricting taxation: the impact of Proposition 13 on California tax and expenditure trends

Article Abstract:

The impact of the Proposition 13 on California's tax and expenditure levels and the delivery of basic services was investigated. The 1966-1990 data used included population, Consumer Price Index, per capita personal income, and tax and expenditure statistics from state and local governments. The results, which showed an initial reduction of state and local expenditures, reveal that there is no basis for blaming the 1978 measure for every conceivable fiscal problem besetting state and local governments.

Diseconomies of school district size

Article Abstract:

The public demand for reforms in the centralized educational system of the United States has brought to light the demerits of large school district sizes. Academicians and administrators argue that consolidation of school districts results in better education facilities at reduced costs. However, their claims have been challenged with regard to the performance of students, local incentives, and the choice of schools offered to the parents of school-going children.
