An overview is presented on the impact of Pres George W. Bush on future federal housing policies, focusing on the role of new Dept of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez. Martinez has indicated support for investor-based tax credits for housing construction, Section 8 rental voucher options, and participation by religious organizations in providing community housing.

Improving Section 8

Article Abstract:

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 housing policy is condemned for destabilizing Philadelphia-area neighborhoods. As particularly noted, this financial assistance program does not promote affordable housing, restoration or revitalization of substandard properties in mixed-income neighborhoods.
