Relationship between drinking motives and drinking restraint

Article Abstract:

Coping Motives (CM) drinkers, who drink to decrease negative internal states, tend to be more concerned with limiting their drinking than Enhancement Motives (EM) drinkers, who drink to increase positive internal states, and Social Motives (SM) drinkers, who drink to affiliate with others. Both EM and CM scores are liked to higher Cognitive and Emotional Preoccupation scores, and this finding therefore indicates that CM drinkers should have a reduced risk, and EM drinkers a raised risk, for excessive drinking. This is because high Cognitive and Behavioral Control scores have a moderating influence on consumption among people high in preoccupation.
