Rural challenge(s): partnership and new rural governance

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the formation of rural partnerships, and their role in governance and funding to deliver services. Issues include concern the socio-economic conditions of rural areas, and how these differ from the urban model on which rural regeneration is based, and the pressures and constraints surrounding the implementation of rural partnerships.

Rural youths' images of the rural

Article Abstract:

An analysis of how 'rurality' is perceived by teenagers in a remote rural area in Norway is presented in an attempt to provide an empirical account of the outcome of social construction processes. Findings demonstrate that while most rural youth view the countryside as being idyllic and dull simultaneously, the predominant view is far from hegemonic.

Women's fear of crime: A rural perspective

Article Abstract:

A brief description on the women's experience of fear of crime in rural areas based on the research in New Zealand and UK is presented. The importance of social constructions of the rural community in identifying the relevance of the 'stranger' and the marginalized 'other' to women's feelings of fear is demonstrated.
