Substance abuse treatment for pregnant women: a window of opportunity?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the treatment service records of 227 pregnant women and 277 non-pregnant women in the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services Management Information System suggests that continuing treatment works best for pregnant women. Pregnant women were 2.8 times more likely to enter residential facilities, 5.4 times more likely to use methadone programs and 1.7 times more likely to be readmitted for detoxification. This implies a greater difficulty for pregnant women to reach stable recovery.

Female PCP-using jail detainees: proneness to violence and gender differences

Article Abstract:

Female jail inmates benefit from their use of phencyclidine (PCP) as a self-medication for their proneness to violence and they become more aggressive when not using PCP, as withdrawal stimulates a dysphoric state. Male PCP users are more aggressive and violent than the female PCP users. However, females addicted to PCP from an early age show greater assaultive behavior, irritation, resentment, and hostility when consuming PCP. For both sexes, the young PCP users are more violent than the older users.
