The Internet: why LHAs should get connected
Article Abstract:
The Internet can benefit local housing authorities and housing/community development agencies in at least four ways. The first is through efficient communications using electronic mail and news groups or electronic bulleting boards. The second is through instant access and distribution of relevant information. There are a number of sites on the Internet's World Wide Web that provide timely data on legislative developments, Dept of Housing and Development activities and regulations, and public housing administration. A third use of the Internet in housing and community development is in the area of public relations. It is an ideal tool for communicating the local agency's accomplishments to the public and for finding out what the media is saying about the industry. A fourth use is for networking, since the Internet facilitates the sharing of ideas and information among peers.

Preventing tenant fraud
Article Abstract:
Local housing authorities (LHA) can verify the eligibility of families for housing programs through the Internet-based service TenantCheck. Housing assistance is not available to families with a history of fraud, failure to pay financial obligations, drug-related activity or violent criminal activity. While these families can easily be spotted when they apply for housing in their previous LHAs, they are much tougher to identify when they show up in the waiting lists of other housing agencies. The TenantCheck system can prove very useful in this regard because it has a database listing nearly 6,300 ineligible tenant families. The system can also identify invalid social security numbers. Housing authorities interested in TenantCheck will need Internet access, a Web browse, Netscape Navigator, American On-line or any other Java-compatible search engines.
