Professionals and amateurs
Article Abstract:
Modern stresses challenge ingenuity and will, discouraging intellectuals' autonomy. Many academics have no interest in the real world and write for academic advancement, not for social change. In the 20th century intellectuals have exposed false prophets and ancient traditions. The attitude that an intellectual's work is something done for a living, requiring the individual to be uncontroversial, is damaging. Intellectuals must show interest in the wider view. They may be threatened by specialisation, expertise, power and authority.
