Revamping the popular in Snow White and Pubis angelical: the residual fictions of Donald Barthelme and Manuel Puig
Article Abstract:
The division between literature that is classified as serious and that classified as trivial has been blurred in modern Latin American and US fiction, where popular forms have been used in new ways. Two writers whose work falls into this category are Manuel Puig and Donald Barthelme. Critics may perceive their work as trash, while others may see it as revamping popular forms and thus turning them into serious literature. Parody is used to subvert the relationship between mass culture and elitist culture.

History and popular fiction: two worlds collide. A reply to Feilitzch's article on Karl May
Article Abstract:
Feilitzsch, historian, claimed erroneously that the popular fiction of Karl May was pseudo-realistic. Feilitzch suggests that May was a bad influence on readers, but does not back up his claims. Feilitzch did not use original versions of May's work for reference, but edited and rewritten texts, as his bibliography indicates. Feilitzch treats evidence in a contemptuous way. He describes May as hypocritical, but does not back this up at all.
