The Yellow Pages as a sampling frame for farm surveys: assessing potential bias in agri-environmental research

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that picking respondents from the Yellow Pages for environmental management research surveys excludes life-style farmers who are generally more conservation-oriented and farm on a lower profit margin. Results are based on a 1996 study of farmers in the Martson Value Community Forest, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, and a 1994 study of the Cambrian Mountains Environmentally Sensitive Area in Wales; topics include inadequacies of using the Yellow Pages as a framework for surveys, such as financial considerations and privacy issues.

Gunning for rural England: the politics of the promotion of military land use in the Northumberland National Park

Article Abstract:

The article examines the view of the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MoD) regarding military land use by looking at how military training in a national park is configured as a legitimate use of space. The analysis is based on a 1997 public inquiry into proposed developments in the Otterburn Training Area in the Northumberland National Park, England; topics include the justification of gun use in the park, conservation and environmental protection, and the effect of a military training base in the park.

Khaki conservation: an examination of military environmentalist discourses in the British Army

Article Abstract:

The article analyzes the discourses of military environmentalism, examining so-called environmentally compatible military training policies, administration of conservation, and military land management. The author argues that the military discourses are an attempt by the British Army to justify their policies by making them seem as if they are compatible with the environment.
