The enactment of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1994 meant that countries can move their boundaries to the edge of their continental shelf. Marine Geologist Jim Gardner is commanding a research ship to map the exact topography of the continental shelf on the possibility that the U.S. could extend its territory.
