The polls - a review: American public opinion and the Gulf War: some polling issues

Article Abstract:

Research on public opinion polls conducted during the Persian Gulf War indicated that not all of the surveys were accurate. An article in the Washington Post, for example, stated that public support for aggressive measures ranged from around 40% to around 80%, depending on the way in which the questions were asked. The research also showed that the results of overnight polls should be interpreted carefully because heavily reported, disappointing events could lead to a temporary increase in support for the war.

Polling, under the gun: political attitudes in Estonia, surveyed at the height of the Soviet coup attempt, August 1991

Article Abstract:

The Saar Poll of the Mass Communication Research and Information Centre in Estonia surveyed 206 Estonians and 201 Russian-speaking residents of Estonia on Aug 21, 1991. The telephone surveys investigated residents' attitudes toward the the Soviet coup attempt. The results indicated that 99% of the Estonians and 69.1% of the Russian-speaking residents either fully or partially supported the Estonian Supreme Council. Estonians expressed more support for Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin than non-Estonians.

Preelection survey methodology: details from eight polling organizations, 1988 and 1992

Article Abstract:

Pollsters take many preelection polls during presidential campaigns, and the polls provide a wealth of information about voting habits long after the election is settled. The ways in which pollsters CBS/New York Times; Chilton Research Services; Gallup Organization; Louis Harris and Assoc; Media General; ICR Survey Research Group; Roper Starch Worldwide; and Yankelovich Partners obtained and interviewed respondents for the 1988 and 1992 presidential elections are detailed.
