The reinvention of public green space

Article Abstract:

A new approach to public spaces that integrates infrastructure needs, takes equity into account, and reexamines the range of uses public spaces offer is examined. The potential for urban greening through a case study in the dense inner core of Los Angeles that probed local resident attitudes and values toward a more inclusive strategy is considered, and that measured the potential value of nature's services in the urban fabric using a GIS program.

The culture of urban space

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the importance of public space in defining culture in urban communities are examined, focusing on the contributions made to an understanding of this subject by the authors of four books published since 1995. The books are "Capital Culture" by Linda McDowell, "Spaces of Hope," by David Harvey, "The Cultures of Cities," by Sharon Zukin, and "Cultural Geography," by Don Mitchell.

Analyzing public space at a metropolitan scale: notes on the potential for using GIS

Geographical information systems (GIS) could be useful tools to analyze urban study, planning, and geographic aspects of public space. Barriers to using GIS include include "thin" data categories, data incompatibilities and gaps, and economic differences in research.
