The resettlement of women and children refugees

Article Abstract:

Western countries have become more accomodating to women and children refugees. The changes in the social policies of the US, Australia and Canada indicate that setting quotas in admitting refugees should be abolished for it denies the migrants their basic human rights. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' women-at-risk subprogram signifies the persistence of a male bias in the resettlement program. Such prejudice in the admittance of migrants must be properly addressed by governments in resettlement countries.

The politics of migration policy in the United States

Article Abstract:

Migration into the US has been viewed as results of politico-military or economic events elsewhere. US policies on migration were mostly based on domestic factors rather than a concern on its impact on regional integration. The US became a country of mass migration as a result of the influx of migrant farmworkers and later to skilled migrants and their families. However, in recent years, the trend in US migrations have shifted to refugees and permanent residents as well as an influx of high-level workers.

Breaking up is hard to do

Article Abstract:

The proposed reorganization of the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is aimed at redistributing the department's functions. The INS' responsibilities will include protecting the borders, preventing illegal border crossing, inspecting all entrants and removing illegal immigrants. Its other service functions related to the issuance of visas and citizenship and the protection of local labor force will be given to the State Dept and Dept of Labor, respectively.
