The role of social networks and media receptivity in predicting age of smoking initiation: A proportional hazards model of risk and protective factors

Article Abstract:

There is a need to identify the factors linked with early smoking initiation. Some studies show that smoking by social network members and receptivity to pro-tobacco marketing are linked with the age of smoking initiation. A study has identified important correlates of age of smoking initiation based on bivariate methods and a multivariate proportional hazards model. Smoking initiation age was earlier in adolescents with a favorite tobacco advertisement. Results indicate that smoking behavior of social network members and pro-tobacco marketing are significant determinants of age of smoking initiation.
