Article Abstract:

Popular fictional works of the late eighteenth-century in Japan reflect a predominance of materialistic themes far removed from the abstract themes of Tokugawa order. These works of fiction depict the social processes and the changing moral values of eighteenth-century Japan. The works played a crucial role in the formulation and establishment of new socio-cultural traditions, which ultimately resulted in the overthrow of Tokugawa government in 1868.
