Toward an interparadigmatic dialogue on Goffman

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Erving Goffman plays an important role in the theoretical reunification of the diverse perspectives across the social sciences and humanities. Because he is a prominent figure in sociology, scholars turn to his insights and his writings to explain the social phenomena. Analysis of the different perspectives on sociology shows that each perspective has at least a theory that he proposed. Since he was central to each perspective, it is believed that unification can be achieved by establishing a general theory that would account for the varying interpretations of his theories.

Goffman and interactional citizenship

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Erving Goffman's microanalysis of the interaction order has significantly contributed to the understanding of the macrosociological theory of citizenship. His writings reveal a concept of interactional citizenship, which refers to a set of vague and diffuse but vitally felt expectations and obligations that pertain to interactional displays of respect, regard and dignity for a person. Interactional citizenship may either integrate groups composed of status unequals or it may create tension between these groups.

Goffman on feminist perspective

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Erving Goffman contributed to the development of feminist theory by providing the framework for feminist discourse. This framework focuses on the interconnections between the abuse of women in public and at the home. These connections, which were embodied in the slogan 'the personal is political,' also laid out the conceptual grounding for feminist work on the relationship between gender and spoken interaction.
