Unjust freedom: the ethics of client self-determination in runaway youth shelters
Article Abstract:
Social workers working with young people who have run away from home to runaway youth shelters face ethical dilemmas. The NASW Code of Ethics provides little guidance. The basic dilemma is between the liberty-based client self-determination principle and the justice-based client competency principle. Application of Wakefield's understanding of the value of social work, as minimal distributive justice, reveals that presuming client competency would violate the basic tenet of social work, and that practitioners in runaway youth shelters should restrict client self-determination.

Ropes course training for youth in a rural setting: 'At first I thought it was going to be boring....'
Article Abstract:
The Rope Challenge course is an outdoor activity used as a means of intervention for youths in high risk environments characterized by high unemployment, alcohol problems and low income. An evaluation of one such course in a rural setting found that children who underwent the course, which involves teamwork and problem solving, reported that they gained positive attitudes after the course. Their positive response was evident in their scores on the Modified American Drug and Alcohol Survey for Youth test.

HIV/AIDS among youth: a community needs assessment study
Article Abstract:
Adolescents have a relatively high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge but participate in risk behavior not correlated with such level of knowledge. This was revealed by an HIV/AIDS needs assessment of adolescents, which included 1,567 high school, middle school and community youth. Data also indicate that parents and schools are crucial sources of information about HIV/AIDS.
