A successful buddy system in diving requires a strong commitment from both partners to stay together underwater. Diving buddies must be compatible with each other and must share the same interests. They must have similar diving skills and a common underwater vocabulary.

Safe ascents

Skin divers should have understand the proper procedures for ascending to the surface with and without ascent lines. They should ascend at a rate of 30 ft. per minute and should take three-minute breaks every 10 to 20 feet.

Riding the rips

A rip current can be a diver's best friend. This phenomenon is produced when waves break on a shallow water bar in rapid succession. Experienced swimmers can ride rip currents out through the surf zone.
