The propwash method is an underwater excavation technique developed by Mel Fisher in the 1960s and is widely used by many archaeologists. The method uses the backwash of a ship's propeller which is deflected via a large curved tube to blow away sand in the sea bed.

Piccard is considered one of the pioneers of undersea exploration. He and Don Walsh set a record in 1960 when they became the first persons to descend more than 35,000 feet into the Marianas Trench in the bathyscaphe named Trieste.
