An annual meeting by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society in Jun 1992 discussed the latest information on diving science and medicine. Highlights of the conference include a safety discussion on women divers and the presentation of scientific papers on a variety of research fields pertaining to diver sickness problems.

Oxygen toxicity
Article Abstract:
Nitrox, a combination of 32% oxygen and 68% nitrogen which is used to replace air for diving, can be toxic. Breathing nitrox mixtures with unproportionate amounts of oxygen and nitrogen under high partial pressure causes poisonous effects on the lungs and brain.

Thermal stress
Article Abstract:
Hypothermia or loss of body heat is an important consideration in diving. This condition may cause divers to lose nerve function and body heat. Ways of avoiding these extreme temperatures are discussed and modes of treatment presented.
