Spearfishing pioneers were adept at fish identification. The Nikonos Fish ID Challenge is a fishing contest for skin divers. The event is a test of the divers' skills in both fish identification and fish photography.

The 1997 Nikonos Shootouts
Article Abstract:
Several changes were adopted for the 1997 Nikonos Shootout underwater photography contest. These include the removal of the 'Standard' lens competition and the introduction of a new category called Portfolio.
