Surveys show market rebound; four studies give muddied picture of past season

Article Abstract:

Skiing remains the most rapidly growing major sport, although the rate has slowed from the 13.3 per cent annual growth rate. Attendance statistics indicate, that 1982 was a record year, exceeding the previous record high reached in 1978-79 season by almost 1 per cent. Attendance gains were made primarily in the West Coast states and the Southeast. Retail audit shows an increase in dollar sales volume, achieved by heavy discounting.

Shops cut debt to $16.7 million, lowest since '79

Article Abstract:

Ski retailer debt dropped to its lowest level since 1979. The ski retailers are doing better than retailing in general, due to a better management of inventories and bills. The pressure to pay overdue bills has increased. Ski shop failures this year total 94 with losses of 3.6 million.

New bankruptcy law gives ailing companies potent bill collector

Article Abstract:

A new Bankruptcy Code protects firms in bankruptcy or similar proceedings from losing money owed them. U. S. trustees appointed by the Department of Justice now have increased powers to aid the creditor.
