The UN has named 1998 as the Year of the Oceans which means that various plans will be implemented in an attempt to educate the public on issues concerning the sea such as overfishing and coastal development. Special conferences will be held to renew the public's appreciation of the sea.

Space: keeping the dream alive

Space programs have made people aware how fragile the world is, and thus, prompted more environmetally-friendly activities. In the same way, diving has shown people the beauty of the underworld, which developed passion and commitment within them towards protecting marine life.

The National Oceans Conference was highlighted by Pres Clinton's proposal for a comprehensive national oceans policy. It also showed the willingness of marine experts and government representatives to communicate with each other to address ocean environmental issues.
