The best baitfish for catching smallmouth bass include bottom-hugging darters, minnows and soft-finned alewives. Bigger baitfish usually attract bigger smallmouth bass. They forage in water that is 10-40 feet deep during the summer and drop even lower in late fall, when the fishing season ends.
