African American women's self-determination across the stages of change for exercise

Article Abstract:

Self-determination in the regulation of exercise behavior in a sample of 105 African American women is examined. Consistent with theoretical predictions, individuals who had been active over a period of time were more self-determined in their behavior regulation and exercising to achieve an outcome emerged as the most influential factor in discriminating active participants from inactive ones.

The grounds on which a person engages in a physical education instrumentality, has an effect on his or her state goal orientation, time spent practicing, motivation and the overall performance. This study reveals that instructions are powerful tools in strengthening the motivational behavior.

Article Abstract:

The partially conflicting hypothesis derived from the two motivational theories namely self-determination theory and future time perspective theory are examined. The motivational impact of the future is examined using an experimental rather than a correlational design.
