Barge folk
Article Abstract:
A former US Navy barge brought to Tabuaeran, or Fanning island in the 1970s settled into the lagoon in a way that makes it a perfect tie-up and repair station for crews and boats on the way from Hawaii to French Polynesia. The rusty barge serves as the center of gravity and community for the tiny subculture of cruisers who visit Fanning, one of the 33 islands that make up the Republic of Kiribati.
