Meningococcal meningitis, a rare blood disease, mostly affects children under 2 years of age, affecting kidney and lungs and sometimes causing diminished intellect, or amputation, or death, if the child is not vaccinated in time. A $70 Menomune vaccine which offers protection against four or five strains of bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis among children is available.
