Physician Joyce Guillory has taught women with arthritis alternative methods for performing an adequate self-breast exam. Techniques she recommends include using the palm of the hand rather than the fingers and lifting the breast with one hand if the arm cannot be raised over the head.

Breast cancers found in overweight women are usually more advanced than that found in slim women. The fat tissue makes it difficult to detect lumps during self-examination in such cases. All woman should have regular mammograms, but this is even more important for obese women.
