Article Abstract:
Beginning runners with no athletic background should begin with a physical exam and start training by walking. It is important not to strain muscles. A 10-week starter routine that combines running and walking is discussed. Safety tips are included.

Demko, 27, placed sixth in the 1992 women's National Championships and participated in the Ekiden Relay team's meet in Japan. She has dropped her 10-kilometer time to 33 minutes. Her training philosophy and workout routine are presented.
