The women's sprint races featured impressive performances by Gwen Torrence and Gail Devers in the 100-meter race. The 200-meter race featured the top-three times in the world for 1996, but the 400-meter race was seen as a failure because none of the times figure to be good enough to win gold.

Article Abstract:

The winners of the men's steeplechase, 5000-meters and 10,000-meters were won by Mark Croghan, Bob Kennedy and Todd Williams respectively. Dan Middleman's third-place finish in the 10,000-meter race was a huge surprise because he was not considered a strong contender in the event.

Road Race Rankings

Article Abstract:

A computerized ranking of road racers for 1998 was compiled based on points awarded by a specific formula. Runners from Kenya held nine of the top ten spots for men and seven of the top ten spots for women. Top US runners were Rod DeHaven and Libbie Hickman.
