High temperatures within the engine reduces the viscosity of lubricating oils making them less efficient in areas where they are needed. Multi-grade oils have higher viscosity indices because of additive chemistry. This increases the viscosity of oils and makes them more efficient lubricants.

Hidden viscosity

Article Abstract:

The viscosity of a motorcycle's lubricating oil sweeps it into the crankshaft and enables the bearing to carry a load of several thousands pounds per sq in. Computer modeling of oil shows that the apparent viscosity increases under pressure.

Fighting friction

Friction loss in motorcycle engines is largely caused by piston and ring friction. Cylinder materials and types of lubricating oils are discussed in relation to friction reduction.
