An archer's effective shooting range is affected by many factors. Besides continuous practice, archers should hone their distance-estimating skills and use a rangefinder. In addition, Golden Eagle Archery has developed a game to help hunters determine their effective shooting range.

Bowhunters, on an average, will shoot at whitetail deer from a range of about 20 yards. This is normally close enough for a good shot, but the hunter should not be overconfident because any number of things, ranging from shadows to sudden sounds, can cause the deer to bolt.
