Issues concerning the correct course of action to take to minimize rolling on sailboats passing through the wakes of motorboats are presented. Wake avoidance manoeuvres in open water and in restricted channels are discussed.

How to handle wakes

Article Abstract:

The wakes generated by powerboats can have a disturbing effect on a sailboat. The impact can be minimized by taking the wake directly on the stern or 30 degrees on the bow. The position of other boats must be considered.
