Kill the fish to save the fishery

Article Abstract:

More than 70 people left the Utah Department of Resource Services as a result of a decision by Utah biologists to kill the trout in Utah's Fremont River in an attempt to stop the spread of whirling disease. The decision was fought by a hatchery owned by the family of Mike Leavitt, who became governor.

Trout plague

Article Abstract:

Fishing streams and lakes in 18 states are affected by Myxosoma cerebralis, commonly known as the whirling disease. This fish plague has reduced the rainbow trout population in the Madison River in Montana by over 90%.

Whirling Disease Found in San Jaun River

Article Abstract:

A disease that infects and kills trout has been detected in the San Juan River in New Mexico. Authorities there are trying to stop the spread of disease before it gets out hand.
