Slower marathon runners have a lot more time than their competitors to think about why they enter a race, especially when they watch most of their fellow runners pass them. One consolation for the tortoises of marathon running is that they do not have to repeat their ordeal.

Article Abstract:

It is time to runners to expand their reasons for losing or doing poorly in races. Any excuse that ends in 'itis' is always effective. The more syllables a word has, the more sympathetic race fans will be. They may even want the winners to forfeit their prizes.
