The increasing interest in sports memorabilia has brought with it excessive prices for autographed items, such as $1,750 for an autographed Mickey Mantle baseball bat. The marketing of such items must be kept realistic and affordable if the interest in memorabilia is to be sustained.

The sports memorabilia industry accounts for $4 billion annually. The price of any specific item is a matter of supply and demand. For example, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-signed basketball sells for $150 and a Bill Russell-signed ball for $495 because Russell has signed fewer balls.
