Mitochondrial myopathies: Diagnosis, exercise intolerance, and treatment options

Article Abstract:

The diagnosis, exercise intolerance, and treatment options of mitochondrial myopathies are studied. It is revealed that exercise intolerance in most patients with mitochondrial myopathies results from an impairment in peripheral oxygen extraction and the diagnosis of these disorders relies on a multitude of tests with exercise testing playing an important role.

Plasma malondialdehyde increases transiently after ischemic forearm exercise

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the effects of ischemic isometric exercise on the concentration and timing of aldehyde and ketone generation utilizing high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The study showed that forearm ischemic exercise induced sufficient physiologic stress to the exercising muscle to generate an increase in oxidative stress.

Immunological changes in response to exercise: Influence of age, puberty, and gender

Article Abstract:

A study tested the hypothesis that exercise-induced perturbation and recovery of the immune system would vary with age, puberty and gender in healthy children and adolescents. The results highlight the need to control for age, puberty and gender when interpreting immunologic responses to exercise in a pediatric population.
