Hawkins' only official victory at a golf tournament was at the 1956 Oklahoma City Open. He finished second at 19 other tournaments, losing to players such as Cary Middlecoff, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Bob Charles. He has even finished second on the Senior Professional Golfers Assn (PGA) Tour.

Kite has been the dominant US player in the Ryder Cup and is captain of the 1997 US team. He has many questions about how to approach the Valderrama Golf Course in Spain and about matching teammates with one another. For Kite, sportsmanship is the most important part of the Ryder Cup.
