Navigation at anchor

Article Abstract:

Boaters need to be aware of navigation and their position even when they are anchored. Wind changes, tide changes, natural movement of the boat and the possibility that the anchor will pull out require such awareness so that boaters do not lose anchor and become lost.

Issues are presented concerning the action which can be taken by the owners of powerboats who are caught in bad weather. The dangers associated with stopping inboard engines, drifting and shallow drafts are discussed.

The bearings of an approaching boat should be checked with a compass or by sighting across the bow to avoid collisions. Radar, radar reflectors and adequate running lights are helpful.
