The 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race is expected to have the smallest number of entries, with 10, in the race's 24-year history. The event should prove to be competitive, given that four of the skippers are former America's Cup winners. Descriptions of the entries are given.

Sydney: so near, yet so far away

Frenchman Jean-Luc Van den Heede lost his second place position in the 1994-95 BOC Challenge boat race when he reached Bass Strait on the way to Sydney, Australia. A storm swept the seas, causing Van den Heede to retire from the race.
