Power output during stage racing in professional road cycling

Article Abstract:

A study aims to evaluate the power output during a multistage professional road race using direct power measurements and to compare these with the performance measurements using competition heart rate recordings. The mean output ranged near the lactate threshold (LT) and when compared with heart rate measurement underestimated the time spent in intensity zones below and above LT and overestimated the time spent in moderate-intensity zone which paves the way for training specificity through an optimized monitoring performance.

Cycling power output produced during flat and mountain stages in the Giro d'Italia: a case study

Article Abstract:

The changing cycling power output of a professional cyclist during flat and mountain stages in the Giro d'Italia is studied. Results reveal that mountain stages need submaximal, constant power output throughout longer periods, while flat stages require large variability of power output with short bursts of high power and long periods with less intensity of exercise.

Myocardial stress after competitive exercise in professional road cyclists

Article Abstract:

Research points out that professional road cyclists engaged in endurance exercise do not sustain structural myocardial damage as opposed to in healthy individuals engaged in prolonged endurance exercise. However, in older athletes there occurs a rise in brain natriuretic peptide, which may signal diastolic left heart ventricular dysfunction.
