Article Abstract:

New research indicates that a diet high in leafy green vegetables and other vegetables can prevent the macular degeneration that is the major cause of noncorrectable vision loss in those over 50. The necessary nurtrients are found in five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Phenolic compounds found in wines may play a role in preventing heart disease. Red wines have more phenolic compounds than white wines, and dry wines have more than sweet wines. The amount of tannin in the wines determines the amount of phenolic compounds.

Blood vessels of men who took vitamin E for two years showed less buildup than those of men who had not taken the antioxidant. More studies are needed before vitamin E supplements can be recommended for heart attack prevention.
