A cruiser's story about a huge population of humpbacks in Palmerston Atoll was verified by a Whale Conservation Institute research, Jonah Gouin, when he set sail aboard the schooner, Rachel J. Slocum. He swam with and photographed the humpbacks which did not fear humans.

Cruising sailors run the risk of hypothermia caused by convection, radiation, conduction and evaporation. The symptoms of hypothermia begin when body temperature goes below 95 degrees. Adequate nutrition and rest are important factors in preventing hypothermia.
