Sports, sexual behavior, contraceptive use, and pregancy among female and male high school students: testing cultural resource theory

Article Abstract:

The relationship among athletic participation and sexual behavior, contraceptive use and pregnancy in female and male high school students is analyzed. Cultural resource theory suggests that sports participation may reduce girls' adherence to traditional roles and give them additional social and personal resources in the sexual bargaining process, while sports gives boys similar resources and strengthens their commitment to traditional male roles.
