Jan Mayen, with no harbors and no permanent residents, is a 30-mile stretch of barren, volcanic landscape in the Greenland Sea. The island, located at 71 degrees north, has summer weather characterized by an endless progression of low-pressure systems that parade across the North Atlantic.
