Japanese motorcycle manufacturers popularized lightweight, user-friendly models in the 1960s and won more market share by selling larger bikes in the 1970s. The motorcycle market deteriorated in the 1980s. The industry hopes to increase sales in the 1990s by targeting the entry-level buyer.
